The Answers Are In Nature Fatal illnesses from water-borne bacteria claim millions of lives in developing countries each year. But with cooperation from Mother Nature, losses are becoming increasingly preventable. A recently discovered process effectively uses seeds from the native Moringa oleifera tree to eliminate up to 99.99% of the harmful microbes in previously untreated water."Moringa oleifera grows in Africa, Central and South America, the Indian subcontinent, and South East Asia. It ranks among the world's most useful trees, according to a Current Protocols in Microbiology report at ScienceDaily.com. Not only drought resistant, it also yields cooking and lighting oil, soil nutrients, as well as valuable foods derived from its pods, leaves, seeds and flowers. “Most importantly, its seeds purify drinking water at virtually no cost," says researcher Michael Lea of Clearinghouse, a Canadian organization dedicated to investigating and implementing low-cost water purification technologies. Kudos to everyone responsible from the global family of Universal Peace Plan.

APRIL’S CLOSE UPP: POSITIVE SOLUTIONS SHOWCASE Shout Out Goes To: The Transition Town Movement The Transition Town Movement is sweeping like wildfire across the world. This movement is preparing for energy descent and climate change by addressing the relationship between both issues. The Transition Town Movement Contributing writer, Susanna Lepianka The Transition Town Movement, TTM, is an organic global movement that primarily campaigns to raise awareness about climate change and peak oil. TTM recognizes the need to adapt to the challenges that face us through dwindling oil supplies by exploring and embracing new ways of being in the world. Loosely structured local steering groups are created to get ideas off the ground then later disbanded to preserve the integrity of the organic nature of the movement. Each community responds to its own needs. By holding workshops and a variety of events to encourage everyone to participate and take responsibility for the way they live, the whole are encouraged to work together to produce truly sustainable communities fostered by the need not greed ethic. By adopting practices which utilize and share a variety of skills, knowledge, experiences, insights and visions of all the individuals within a community, a whole range of initiatives are springing up from a grass roots level and feeding into the whole creating more all-encompassing, satisfying ways of being in the world that, at the same time, respect the environmental forces of nature. Some examples are: farming co-operatives to help fund ways of producing food at a local level thereby reducing the reliance on oil. Sharing land and supporting local businesses. One way of doing this is through the creation of a local currency which acts as a voucher system helping to keep money circulating within the community which in turn helps to create jobs for local people and fosters cohesiveness. All in all it makes sense to reduce our carbon footprint and create more caring, sharing, accountable communities in tune with nature which, after all, we are not separate from.
